c691: 677: Human Nature [Part 3]

Chapter 691: Chapter 677: Human Nature [Part 3] The ground was littered with the corpses of countless beastmen; never forming any decent offense from start to finish, they declared their defeat in this manner.

The beastmen who bore the brunt of fierce rage also lay howling in pools of blood. Though the frenzied Spiritual Power left them with a hint of life, they were quickly executed on the spot by the human warriors!

Kes, Nierlu, and Lante—three legendary leaders—were slain, completely emptying the middle and upper ranks, leading to some mutiny among the beastmen.

Most of them fled madly back to the city. Compared to the invaders they once were, now they seemed more like a flock of frightened sheep.

A small portion remained, the most loyal guards of Kes. Seeing their leader beheaded, they launched frenzied suicide attacks, which to human warriors who still retained much of their strength, were simply acts of self-destruction.

The Dark Department and Half-Elves joined forces. After about half an hour of assaults, they finally killed all the remaining beastman warriors on the battlefield.

Chen Feng did not order a halt. Beastmen and ogres were first-class hard labor; controlling them could greatly speed up the surrounding construction.

But there was one issue: the number of beastmen was too large.

Even though over fifty thousand perished on the battlefield, twice as many survived. For Order, they were needed slaves, no doubt, but their numbers needed to be controlled.

Whether the Abyss or Doomsday, soft-heartedness was a derogatory term.

To achieve certain purposes, slaughter was an unavoidable means!

Order did not need too many beastmen, as Order’s foundation was only intended for humans, which meant controlling the number of beastmen between twenty to thirty thousand was most suitable.

"Don’t sheath your blades."

Chen Feng glanced at Flower City and said solemnly, "Find these beasts as quickly as possible. Once mad, they would cause serious harm to the surviving humans in the city."

Orders were given one after another.

Victory was only the first step; complete occupation of Flower City would still take some extra time. Under these circumstances, the warriors had no time to rest and followed the fleeing beastmen into the city.

...............

Inside the concentration camp.

Everyone gathered together in panic. An hour ago, there were deafening cannon blasts outside. At first, people thought it was thunder and didn’t pay much attention. But the continuous noises and sky-shaking beast roars made it clear to these refugees that the situation wasn’t as simple as they imagined.

But no one dared to go out and investigate. Months of imprisonment had taught them self-preservation; going out without orders meant immediate death.

Even more terrifying was that beastmen didn’t like rules. What was thought to target offenders, once discovered, would bring additional wrath upon the others, akin to collective punishments spanning nine generations. Thus, everyone became each other’s supervisor.

Ironically, when some planned to escape, it was often the companions beside them who suppressed, not the beastmen.

Life might have lost hope, but it was better than dying in the next second. The informers and suppressors were just a bunch of pitiful folks, scared out of their wits, with an even stronger will to survive.

Kes was undoubtedly an outstanding leader, treating humans like livestock and subtly hypnotizing them. Even if the camp were no longer fortified, people, these so-called high-intelligence creatures, lacked the courage to step outside.

On this planet, all creatures could be called beasts. Humans became nature’s spirit because they could think and possess humanity.

But because of this, humans were the most complex creatures. Not only did they possess humanity, but they also had beastlike nature. In past times, they wore the cloak of civilization, living in a hypocritical world. But when, one day, that cloak was torn, what was revealed was their naked beastlike nature.

In this world, the most fragile thing is humanity.

Do not judge humanity by so-called righteousness and morality because by then, you might see an incomparably filthy mire.

Everyone heard the noises outside, but they didn’t have the courage to open the door and look. Instead, they anxiously gathered, cautiously speculating about what was happening outside.

"Could it be... someone’s come to rescue us?"

At this moment, a voice of doubt came from the crowd. Initially, it spread in a small range, but soon turned into a noisy discussion.

Rescuers? After enduring so much suffering, they might have hoped for this, but after repeated disappointments, they no longer had such thoughts.

Now, though, that question undoubtedly reignited the survivors’ long-extinguished flame of hope.

Perhaps responding to the survivors’ doubts, as everyone eagerly wanted to know what was happening outside, deafening gunshots rang out in the city.

Yes!

These were the sounds only bullets could make; in addition, there were wails of beastmen.

The survivors glanced at each other. At this moment, they could no longer contain their curiosity. Summoning up their courage, they opened the door that had brought them countless humiliations.

Everyone was dumbstruck by what they saw!

What did they see?

Previously ferocious beastmen were now fleeing in panic, and those chasing them were familiar faces!

Humans!

It was indeed humans!

And those once savage monsters who trampled Flower City’s survivors now fled, wishing they had two more legs to run faster and escape this place of strife!

Is this all real?

Survivors could barely describe how they felt now. They thought their lives were about to end like this, perhaps dying at the hands of beastmen, from the high-intensity work, or due to illness. But now, just when they couldn’t hold on any longer, a human force, from who knows where, had rescued them from their plight!

Resounding cries filled the air. The survivors used this moment to vent the unspeakable grievances in their hearts.

Gong Sect stood in the crowd, staring blankly at everything in front of him. For some reason, he suddenly thought of his muttered prayers hours earlier as he lay on the ground.

[If there truly is a god, please come and save us, we... really can’t hold on any longer...]

And now...

Did the so-called god truly descend upon them?!
