c514: 513: Nowhere to Hide

On the way to the Neurosurgery inpatient building, Yan Feifan started making small talk with the man in glasses.

"Xv Fang, are you Mr. Miao’s new student or assistant?"

Xv Fang, the man in glasses, fell silent for a moment. With a complicated expression, he said, "Actually, I’m a surgeon too."

"I used to work at Union Medical College Hospital, but I was fired for making a mistake."

"My family arranged for me to come here, to Mr. Miao, to get myself back on track."

Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh" and didn’t pry any further.

’The mistake must have been a serious one to get him fired.’ Yan Feifan decided against prying and rubbing salt in the wound.

The two walked on in silence until they reached the sterile ward of the neurosurgery department.

Yan Feifan was just there to go through the motions and kill time.

He didn’t waste resources by putting on a sterile gown to enter the ward. Instead, he simply observed the two patients through the large window and called over a nurse for an update.

Currently, the vital signs of the character actor Qin Lang and the sixteen-year-old girl were still within acceptable ranges.

Their conditions were considered good!

However, the two patients’ families excitedly told Yan Feifan that both of them had improved a lot.

Qin Lang’s grunts and moans were much clearer.

The girl also said that her vision was a little clearer than before.

Yan Feifan agreed, saying that it was a good sign, which meant the surgery was effective and the brain damage wasn’t permanent.

In reality, he knew this was just a placebo effect.

The results of the recovery couldn’t be so immediate.

Since Qin Lang hadn’t had aphasia for long, even if everything progressed as expected, it would still take about ten to fifteen days for any noticeable improvement.

As for the girl, if everything went smoothly, it would also take ten to fifteen days before there was a discernible improvement in her vision.

In about three months, there would be significant improvement.

In about six months, she would reach maximum improvement.

At that point, whatever level her vision and field of view had recovered to would be the final result.

It would be impossible for her to regain normal vision.

Yan Feifan killed another ten minutes or so, then glanced at Xv Fang, who was still shadowing him. He sighed resignedly, "Alright, let’s head to the Neurology Department..."

After taking the elevator to the first floor, as soon as Yan Feifan stepped out, he saw several medical staff slowly approaching with an injured person on a gurney.

Yan Feifan was inwardly alarmed by the patient’s condition.

A black chopstick was sticking out from the corner of her left eye, having pierced straight through.

A normal chopstick is about twenty-five centimeters long.

Based on the length of the chopstick sticking out and the angle of insertion, Yan Feifan quickly formed a cross-sectional view of the penetrating object in his mind.

The chopstick had penetrated the patient’s entire cranial cavity, reaching deep into the back of her brain!

Judging from the insertion point, not to mention the brain damage itself, the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery, the right middle cerebral artery, and the posterior cerebral artery had all very likely been affected.

If the chopstick was handled improperly and removing it caused a cerebral artery to bleed, it would be fatal.

This patient reminded Yan Feifan of that unlucky guy he’d run into on the food street.

He’d been unlucky enough to have a barbecue skewer stabbed straight through his mouth and into his brain.

What was even more unlucky was that a well-meaning rescuer, trying to help, had done the worst possible thing and pulled out the skewer. The guy died without being able to say a single last word.

Yan Feifan’s gaze followed the patient as she was moved.

His eager gaze was perhaps a bit too intense. A male doctor in his fifties with some gray in his black hair, who was beside the gurney, felt it and followed his line of sight to look over.

"Ah, Mr. Yan... Perfect timing. Come over and help."

Hearing this, Yan Feifan immediately trotted over, asking eagerly, "Mr. Qin, what can I do to help?"

This was the current head of the Neurosurgery Department, Mr. Qin Peikun.

"Mr. Yan, removing the patient’s chopstick requires someone with a steady hand. Your surgical skills are unmatched. I can’t think of anyone in the hospital whose hands are steadier than yours."

"Mr. Qin, I’ll do my best." Yan Feifan accepted without a moment’s hesitation.

When it came to saving a life, if you had the ability, you had to step up. There was no room for modesty. Yan Feifan was confident in his abilities, so naturally, he wouldn’t refuse. Besides, this was a perfect excuse to postpone his meeting with Mr. Miao.

He and Mr. Qin escorted the patient on the gurney, taking a dedicated elevator to the third-floor operating suite.

Then, the patient was handed over to the surgical nurses and taken into the only hybrid operating room in the surgical area, one equipped for intraoperative imaging.

This operating room had a large, rotating CT scanner that could perform real-time imaging of the surgical site during the procedure.

To avoid radiation, the medical staff had to endure wearing special lead-lined anti-radiation suits.

This suit weighed over twenty pounds.

Wearing this armor-like protective suit throughout an entire surgery—one could only imagine how strenuous it was.
