Renee Jennings’s brow furrowed slightly. She asked, "She won’t let you use a mop, so you have to squat on the floor and wipe it bit by bit with this rag?"
"Yes." Fanny nodded emphatically. "She said mo-mopping doesn’t get it clean enough. That I have to... wipe it with this."
"That’s not just being difficult, that’s deliberately tormenting someone." Renee Jennings’s voice grew serious. "You said you tried to quit, but she wouldn’t let you, is that right?"
"Yes," Fanny said. "She... she withholds my... my wages."
[Damn, what century is this? Who makes someone scrub the floor with a rag?]
[I’m speechless. How much is this employer even paying Fanny?]
Fanny: "The salary is sent... to my husband’s c-card."
"Why is your salary sent to your husband’s card?" Renee Jennings found this strange, a flicker of confusion in her eyes.
Fanny explained, "This jo-job... my hus-husband found it for me."
"Your husband found the job for you?" Renee Jennings was even more surprised. "Why did your husband have to find a job for you?"
[Right? Other jobs might be hard to find, but it’s not hard to find work as a nanny, is it?]
[How can the salary be sent to your husband’s card? You work so hard for that money, don’t you get to spend any of it yourself?]
"My husband says... I’m stupid and... easily sc-scammed." Fanny gave a shy smile. "So he doesn’t let me... manage money."
"I understand." Renee Jennings subconsciously felt this job was more complicated than it seemed. She said softly, "What’s the little dog’s name? And your employer, what do you call her?"
"The dog’s name is... Leo," Fanny replied. "My em-employer is... Miss Donovan."
"Okay, I’m going to talk with Leo now."
Fanny switched her phone camera back to the front-facing view, walked over to Leo, and crouched down, holding the phone so the dog was facing the screen.
Seeing this, Leo stared at the screen with his big, round eyes, curious. "Woof? What’s going on here?"
Renee Jennings chuckled softly and said slowly, "Hello, Leo. Are you hungry?"
"Woof?" Leo’s interest was piqued. "If I’m hungry, are you going to feed me?"
"I can," Renee Jennings said with a grin. "If you’re hungry, I’ll feed you."
"WOOF WOOF WOOF!" Leo’s tongue lolled out in anticipation. "How are you gonna feed me through the phone?"
"That’s easy. I’ll have Fanny feed you for me."
"Woof~ Okay, fine~"
"By the way, Leo, does your owner, Miss Donovan, not like Fanny?"
"WOOF WOOF WOOF! It’s not that she doesn’t like Fanny, she hates Fanny! Because Fanny stole her darling husband!"
